Ooni Pays Tribute to Veteran Actor Kola Oyewo, Describes Him as a Pride of Yorubaland
Tributes continue to pour in following the passing of veteran Nollywood actor, theatre scholar and cultural figure, Pa Kola Oyewo, with the Ooni of Ife joining voices to celebrate what many describe as a life of impact and cultural excellence.
Reports on Saturday revealed that the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, paid tribute to the late actor and recognised his long-standing contributions to Nigerian theatre, education and cultural preservation. However, beyond the public condolences, many within the entertainment industry are reflecting on the lasting influence Oyewo had across generations.
In a condolence statement issued through the monarch’s media office, the Ooni described the late actor as a respected ambassador of Yoruba culture whose work elevated the identity and artistic heritage of the region.
According to the monarch, Oyewo’s achievements extended beyond acting and reached into areas of scholarship, mentorship and the promotion of indigenous values.
Born on March 27, 1946, in Oba-Ile, Osun State, Pa Kola Oyewo built a reputation over decades through his involvement in stage productions, film performances and academic theatre practice.
Although originally from Oba-Ile, he spent a significant part of his life in Ile-Ife, where he became widely recognised within both cultural and intellectual circles.
His contributions helped strengthen the connection between traditional storytelling and modern performance while supporting the development of theatre education in Nigeria.
The Ooni noted that Oyewo’s commitment to excellence and cultural representation earned him admiration both within and outside Yorubaland.
According to the monarch, the veteran actor carried himself as a custodian of tradition and used his platform to preserve and promote values deeply rooted in Yoruba heritage.
Beyond the screen and stage, many colleagues and admirers have continued to remember him as a teacher, mentor and influential figure whose guidance shaped younger generations in the creative industry.
The monarch further stated that the late actor’s body of work would remain an important chapter in Nigeria’s performing arts history.
As tributes continue from family members, industry colleagues and cultural stakeholders, many have described his passing as the loss of a respected voice in Nigerian entertainment and cultural education.
The Ooni extended condolences to the Oyewo family and encouraged them to find comfort in the legacy he leaves behind.
While mourning his passing, supporters and admirers say Pa Kola Oyewo’s influence will continue to live through the performances, knowledge and cultural values he shared throughout his lifetime.
