ZLP Senatorial Aspirant Festus Asikhia Promises People-Focused Representation for FCT Residents
Professor Festus Asikhia has outlined his vision for governance as he pushes to represent residents of the Federal Capital Territory in the Senate under the platform of the Zenith Labour Party.
Reports on Saturday highlighted Asikhia’s commitment to what he described as citizen-centred representation and responsive leadership. However, what we found out is that his campaign message extends beyond political promises and places strong emphasis on accountability, economic development and improving direct communication between government institutions and residents.
According to the senatorial aspirant, governance should remain focused on solving real challenges affecting citizens and ensuring public institutions become more accessible and responsive.
Asikhia stated that his ambition is rooted in the belief that residents deserve stronger participation in decision-making and greater engagement with elected representatives.
One of the major proposals introduced as part of his agenda is the creation of a Federal Capital Territory Direct Complaint Secretariat.
According to him, the initiative would serve as a structured communication channel where residents can submit concerns directly and receive faster responses from relevant authorities.
He argued that effective governance depends on transparency, accountability and creating systems that allow ordinary citizens to actively contribute to public administration.
Beyond governance reforms, Asikhia also highlighted economic growth as a major priority.
He stressed the importance of knowledge-driven leadership and enterprise development as practical approaches to tackling challenges such as unemployment and poverty.
According to him, leaders should possess not only political ambition but also a practical understanding of wealth creation, economic planning and human capital development.
Drawing from his business experience, Asikhia pointed to his involvement in the housing sector as evidence of his interest in economic expansion and job creation.
Through initiatives linked to the Festrut Group of Companies, he said efforts have been directed toward improving access to housing while creating opportunities across construction and related sectors.
He maintained that housing should be viewed as more than residential infrastructure and described it as an important driver of broader economic activity.
In addition to entrepreneurship, Asikhia referenced his background in academia and public service.
He noted that years of involvement in educational leadership and policy-related research have equipped him with experience that could contribute to legislative work and policy oversight.
According to him, meaningful representation should focus on creating opportunities, supporting people and advancing policies that improve everyday living conditions.
With political activities gradually increasing ahead of future electoral contests, Asikhia said his campaign would prioritise issues such as infrastructure, economic empowerment, housing and public service delivery.
