Ecuador Declares National Holiday After Historic 2-1 World Cup Victory Over Germany

Ecuador’s President, Daniel Noboa, has declared Friday a nationwide public holiday following the country’s remarkable 2-1 victory over Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The South American nation secured one of the biggest results in its football history by defeating the four-time world champions and advancing to the knockout stage of the tournament.

President Noboa announced the holiday shortly after the final whistle, praising the players and coaching staff for their determination and resilience despite facing criticism and difficult moments throughout the campaign.

In a message shared on social media, the Ecuadorian leader thanked the team for bringing joy to millions of citizens and celebrating a victory that will be remembered for years.

Ecuador entered the decisive Group E encounter under pressure after suffering a 1-0 defeat against Ivory Coast and playing out a goalless draw against Curaçao in their previous matches. The team needed all three points against Germany to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Germany made a dream start to the game when Leroy Sané opened the scoring in the second minute, putting the European giants ahead early in the contest.

However, Ecuador responded quickly as Nilson Angulo found the equaliser in the ninth minute, restoring confidence and bringing the South American side back into the game.

The match remained closely contested until the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata scored the decisive goal, sending Ecuadorian supporters into celebration and securing a historic victory.

The win guarantees Ecuador a place in the Round of 16 and marks only the second time in the country’s history that the national team has progressed beyond the group stage of a FIFA World Cup.

Their previous achievement came during the 2006 World Cup, making the 2026 campaign another memorable chapter in Ecuadorian football history.

The victory has sparked celebrations across the country, with fans taking to the streets to celebrate the team’s success and the government’s announcement of a national holiday.

Ecuador will now shift its focus to the knockout rounds as the team hopes to continue its impressive World Cup journey and create more history on the global stage.
