Suspected Robber Dies After Mob Attack in Calabar Community
A suspected robber lost his life after being attacked by an angry mob in the early hours of Friday along Ikom Street in Calabar, Cross River State.
The incident reportedly occurred at about 4:00 a.m. when the suspect allegedly entered a residential building and attempted to rob occupants of the house.
According to residents, the suspect gained access to one of the apartments where a woman and other occupants were sleeping. The situation reportedly escalated when the suspect allegedly attempted to assault the woman, who immediately raised an alarm.
Her cries for help attracted neighbours living nearby, who quickly responded to the scene and alerted other residents within the community.
Eyewitnesses said the suspect attempted to escape after the alarm was raised, but residents managed to stop him before he could flee the area.
The suspect was reportedly taken to the main Ikom Street, where a large crowd gathered following the incident.
Residents alleged that the suspect confessed to his actions while being questioned by members of the community.
According to witnesses, some residents initially wanted to hand him over to security agencies for proper investigation and prosecution.
However, tensions reportedly increased when the suspect allegedly made attempts to escape from those holding him.
The development angered some members of the crowd, who reportedly attacked him with various objects.
The suspect sustained severe injuries during the incident and later died before security operatives could arrive at the scene.
The incident has once again raised concerns about mob justice and the increasing cases of jungle justice in various parts of the country.
Residents have expressed concerns over insecurity in the area, stating that incidents of burglary and attempted robbery have become a growing challenge in some communities.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Cross River State, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, confirmed that the police were aware of the incident.
He stated that an official statement would be issued after preliminary investigations are completed.
Police authorities also disclosed that investigations have commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the attempted robbery and the suspect’s death.
Security experts have repeatedly warned against mob actions, stressing that suspects should be handed over to law enforcement agencies to ensure proper investigation and prosecution according to the law.
The incident has generated mixed reactions among residents, with some expressing concern over rising insecurity, while others continue to caution against taking the law into private hands.
