FUOYE Suspends Officials, Student Leader Over Alleged Unauthorised Student Levy

The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two university officials and the President of the Students’ Union Government following allegations linked to the collection of unauthorised payments from students.

Reports indicated that the disciplinary action followed complaints concerning money allegedly collected from newly admitted students for activities associated with a university directorate. However, what we found out is that the institution has presented the suspension as an interim measure while investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the allegations.

According to information released by the university administration, the affected individuals include senior officials connected to student-related operations and educational programme administration, alongside the student union leadership.

University authorities explained that concerns emerged after allegations surfaced that some 100-level students were asked to make payments outside officially approved procedures.

In response to the complaints, management said it established a preliminary fact-finding committee to review the allegations and determine whether internal financial regulations had been violated.

The institution stated that all individuals mentioned in the petition were invited to appear before the committee and were allowed to respond to issues raised during the investigation.

According to findings referenced by the university, questions were raised over whether payments allegedly collected received formal authorisation through established institutional processes.

Management stated that existing university policies require student-related financial transactions to pass through approved channels and receive the necessary institutional clearance.

The administration further alleged that one of the suspended officials may have approved and supervised the collection process without completing required procedures.

Another official was also alleged to have played a role in the implementation of the exercise despite occupying a position connected to student welfare and administrative support.

The university additionally stated that the student union president became part of the investigation following allegations relating to involvement in the handling of funds linked to the matter.

According to management, issues surrounding accountability and financial transparency remain central to the ongoing review process.

University authorities maintained that actions taken were intended to preserve institutional integrity while allowing due process to continue.

Officials stressed that the institution remains committed to protecting students from practices considered inconsistent with university standards and administrative regulations.

The university also reiterated its position against extortion, abuse of office and financial misconduct within its academic environment.

Management stated that all financial dealings involving students must align with approved university procedures and established administrative frameworks.

The institution assured stakeholders that further decisions would be guided by the outcome of ongoing investigations.

The development has generated discussions around accountability, student protection and governance practices within tertiary institutions as universities continue to strengthen internal monitoring systems and financial compliance measures.
