Rivers Court Sentences Man to Seven Years in Prison for Defiling 10-Year-Old Girl

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has sentenced a 25-year-old man, Jerry Njoku, to seven years imprisonment with hard labour after finding him guilty of defiling a 10-year-old girl.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court ordered the convict to pay N5 million in compensation to the victim’s family to support the child’s welfare and ongoing care.

The judgment was delivered on Tuesday by Justice Rita Oguguo, who ruled that the prosecution had successfully established the offence of defilement beyond reasonable doubt.

The court held that the evidence presented during the trial clearly linked the defendant to the crime, leaving no reason to acquit him of the charges.

Justice Oguguo subsequently sentenced Njoku to seven years imprisonment with hard labour, directing that the sentence run concurrently in accordance with the law.

The judge also ordered the payment of a N5 million fine to the victim’s family, stating that the funds should be used for the upkeep and recovery of the young girl.

Following the judgment, defence counsel declined to comment on the court’s decision.

However, the prosecuting counsel, Precious Ordu, a Chief State Counsel with the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, welcomed the verdict and described it as a significant victory for justice.

According to him, the judgment not only delivered justice for the victim and her family but also reinforced the state’s commitment to protecting children from sexual abuse and exploitation.

He stated that the sentence sends a strong message to individuals who may be contemplating similar crimes, warning that the law will not hesitate to punish offenders.

The prosecutor further noted that the compensation awarded by the court would help provide support for the victim as she continues to recover from the traumatic experience.

He expressed hope that the judgment would discourage acts of child abuse and encourage greater respect for the rights and protection of minors.

Cases involving sexual offences against children have continued to attract widespread public concern across Nigeria, with advocacy groups repeatedly calling for tougher enforcement of child protection laws and stiffer punishment for offenders.

Legal experts have also emphasised the need for speedy prosecution of sexual abuse cases to ensure justice for victims and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.

The latest judgment is expected to serve as a deterrent while reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to safeguarding children and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual violence are held accountable for their actions.
