Police Arrest Suspect in Lagos Widow Property Dispute
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has confirmed the arrest of a man accused of harassing and intimidating a 28-year-old widow, identified as Tosin, during a dispute over her late husband’s property in Ikorodu, Lagos State.
The agency disclosed that it stepped into the matter after a video circulating on social media drew public attention to the widow’s situation.
Viral Video Sparked Public Concern
The incident gained widespread attention after human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu shared a video on X (formerly Twitter), alleging that the widow’s father-in-law had locked the entrance to the family property, preventing her from entering the house.
The video quickly attracted public reactions, with many Nigerians calling for authorities to protect the widow and her children.
Widow Alleges Threats and Assault
According to the DSVA, officials contacted Tosin after the report surfaced online.
The widow reportedly alleged that since the death of her husband, she had been subjected to intimidation, physical assault, and repeated threats to her life by members of her late husband’s family.
She also informed the agency that the matter had already been reported to the Owutu Police Division before the agency became involved.
Police Confirm Arrest
Following discussions with the investigating officers, the DSVA said police confirmed that the main suspect had been arrested and remains in custody while investigations continue.
The agency assured the widow and her children that the Lagos State Government remains committed to ensuring their safety and protecting their legal rights throughout the investigation.
Government Reaffirms Support for Victims
The agency praised members of the public and civil society groups for speaking up against domestic and gender-based violence.
It also encouraged residents to continue reporting similar cases through its emergency hotline and official communication channels to enable prompt intervention.
Activist Demands Justice
Reacting to the arrest, activist Harrison Gwamnishu commended both the Lagos State Police Command and the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency for their swift response.
He maintained that the widow should be allowed to remain peacefully in her matrimonial home while mourning her husband and insisted that any property allegedly taken unlawfully should be recovered through legal means.
He also stressed that the rights of the widow and her children must be protected under Nigerian law.
Authorities have assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found culpable will face the appropriate legal consequences.
