Odumeje Criticises Pastors for Praising Politicians, Calls for Greater Government Accountability
Popular Onitsha-based cleric Chukwuemeka “Odumeje” Ohanaemere has urged religious leaders in Nigeria to speak boldly against poor governance, saying pastors have a biblical responsibility to hold public officials accountable instead of praising those in power.
His comments come days after the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, stated that President Bola Tinubu was doing his best to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.
“Pastors Must Speak the Truth”
Speaking during a recent church sermon, Odumeje said spiritual leaders should always stand for truth and justice regardless of political pressure.
Without hiding his position, the cleric mentioned Adeboye by name and argued that pastors are called to correct wrongdoing and challenge governments whenever necessary rather than seek personal benefits from political leaders.
According to him, religious leaders serve as moral voices in society and should not remain silent in the face of national challenges.
Citizens Should Demand Accountability
Odumeje also encouraged Nigerians to understand their constitutional rights and demand accountability from elected officials.
He stressed that presidents, governors, senators, and other public office holders are elected to serve the people, not to be celebrated for carrying out responsibilities funded by taxpayers.
The cleric questioned why citizens often praise politicians for executing projects such as road construction, insisting that such projects are financed with public funds and should be viewed as part of their official duties.
Criticism of National Development
The outspoken preacher maintained that Nigeria has not experienced the level of development expected despite its enormous natural and human resources.
He accused many political leaders of prioritising personal interests over national progress and urged Nigerians not to remain silent about issues affecting the country’s future.

Odumeje also referenced the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, describing him as a historical figure who fought for what he believed was right.
He further touched on issues surrounding natural resources, insecurity, and the detention of Nnamdi Kanu, arguing that Nigerians should pay closer attention to governance and the management of the country’s resources.
His remarks have continued to generate discussions on the role of religious leaders in politics, governance, and national development.
