Senate Approves ₦404.07 Billion Nigeria Police Trust Fund Budget for 2025 and 2026
The Senate of Nigeria has approved a combined budget of ₦404.07 billion for the Nigeria Police Trust Fund to support its operations for the 2025 and 2026 fiscal years.
The approved spending plan allocates ₦170.10 billion for 2025 and ₦233.96 billion for 2026. The funding is expected to strengthen police operations, improve security infrastructure, provide modern equipment, and enhance the overall capacity of the Nigeria Police Force.
The approval followed the adoption of a report submitted by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs. The report was presented by Yunus Akintunde, who explained that the 2025 budget had originally been approved earlier but could not be implemented due to legal issues surrounding proposed amendments to the Nigeria Police Trust Fund Act.
According to the committee, the delays forced the budget to be resubmitted for legislative approval as the official 2025 appropriation.
During the debate, Abdul Ningi described the Police Trust Fund as an important source of funding for the Nigeria Police, noting that prolonged legal disputes had prevented the agency from spending previously approved allocations for nearly three years.
He urged the fund’s management to ensure that every allocated naira is used efficiently while assuring that the National Assembly would closely monitor the implementation of the budget.
Also speaking, Mohammed Monguno praised the structure of the 2026 budget, noting that more than 90 percent of the allocation is dedicated to capital projects rather than recurrent expenses.
Presiding over the session, Barau Jibrin expressed confidence that the approved funds would strengthen the police’s fight against kidnapping, banditry, terrorism, and other security challenges across the country.
The approval comes shortly after the Senate passed the Police Trust Fund Act (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to improve the legal framework governing the fund. The proposed legislation also recommends increasing the fund’s statutory allocation from 0.5 percent to 1 percent of revenue from the Federation Account.
The latest budget is expected to enhance policing nationwide by improving operational capacity, infrastructure development, and security service delivery.
