284 Stranded Nigerians Return from South Africa as Federal Government Continues Evacuation Exercise
Another group of Nigerians who voluntarily chose to return home from South Africa has safely arrived at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos aboard an Air Peace evacuation flight.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the aircraft transported 284 passengers, including 272 adults and 12 infants, along with two government officials coordinating the evacuation exercise.
The latest arrival forms part of the Federal Government’s ongoing voluntary repatriation programme, designed to assist Nigerians who wish to return from South Africa.
Upon landing in Lagos, the returnees were welcomed by officials from relevant government agencies, who immediately began registration, documentation, and other reception procedures. Authorities also confirmed that support services are being provided to help the returnees reintegrate into society.
This is the fourth batch of Nigerians evacuated under the programme. The first group of 258 returnees arrived on June 9, followed by a second batch of 66 people and a third group of 269 returnees.
The continued evacuation comes amid growing concerns over the safety and welfare of some foreign nationals in South Africa. On June 30, groups of South African protesters staged demonstrations in parts of the country, calling for foreigners to leave.
The Nigerian government has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting citizens abroad who choose to return home voluntarily while continuing to monitor developments affecting Nigerians living overseas.
