Atiku Abubakar Appoints Kenneth Okonkwo as Official Spokesperson Ahead of 2027 Elections
Former Vice President and presidential hopeful, Atiku Abubakar, has appointed actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo as his official spokesperson, marking a significant development in preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The appointment comes just weeks after Okonkwo publicly expressed concerns over the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s choice of vice-presidential candidate, sparking discussions within the party over regional representation and internal democracy.
Kenneth Okonkwo announced his new role in a statement shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, where he thanked Atiku for the confidence reposed in him.
“I give God all the glory to be appointed by His Excellency Atiku Abubakar as his Spokesperson. I thank HE AA for the immense confidence reposed in me,” he wrote.
Okonkwo described the appointment as evidence of Atiku’s leadership style, saying the former vice president believes in dialogue, consultation, and consensus rather than sidelining associates who express differing opinions.
According to him, Atiku encourages open discussions and seeks peaceful resolutions whenever disagreements arise within his political circle.
He further disclosed that recent meetings involving Atiku and senior members of the African Democratic Congress addressed concerns relating to the political interests of the South-East ahead of the 2027 elections.
Okonkwo stated that despite the limitations posed by the Electoral Act 2026 and the prevailing political realities, assurances were given that the interests of the South-East would be protected within the party’s broader strategy.
The former Labour Party presidential campaign spokesperson also appreciated key political figures, including Kashim Imam, former ADC National Chairman Ralphs Nwosu, and Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties, Ekene Onwuka, for their efforts toward strengthening the party.
He equally thanked his family, supporters, and friends for their prayers and encouragement, promising to serve with wisdom, courage, and dedication while contributing to what he described as the vision of building a better Nigeria.
The appointment follows Okonkwo’s recent criticism of reports suggesting that the ADC was considering a vice-presidential candidate from the South-South geopolitical zone.
He had argued that such a decision could further sideline the South-East, noting that the region has neither produced a president nor vice president since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.
With the 2027 elections drawing closer, political observers believe the appointment signals Atiku Abubakar’s efforts to strengthen his media and communications team while consolidating support across different regions of the country.
